Liturgy of the Word: The Second Reading

As we continue our journey through the Liturgy of the Word, we focus on our encounter with the words of God Himself. The Second Reading comes from the New Testament: one of the epistles, the Acts of the Apostles, or the book of Revelation. The Second Reading is often selected independently of the first reading and the Gospel. These New Testament writings reflect on the mystery of Jesus Christ and his saving work and the meaning it has for our lives. The reading shows us how to apply these teachings to our life in Christ and to evermore “put on Christ” and turn away from sin.

Once more at the end of the reading, the lector says, “The Word of the Lord” which should remind us how marvelous it is to hear God speaking to us through the scriptures. We then express our gratitude to God for his goodness and his mercy when we respond, “Thanks be to God.” When listening to today’s Second Reading, let us remember that God is speaking directly to you and me. Listen to the Word of God and reflect on his words and resolve to apply them to your life.
