The Church of the Good Shepherd and our mission church, Immaculate Conception, came from humble beginnings in a then-rural area northeast of San Antonio. Both churches were originally named Immaculate Conception--the church in Schertz was located on FM 78 and was a mission church of Our Lady of Perpetual Help in Selma; and the church in Marion was a mission church of St. James in Seguin.

In November of 1967, then-Archbishop Robert Lucey recognized the rapid growth of the Schertz-Cibolo area and approved the purchase of a ten-acre tract of land as the site for a new church on Live Oak Road (now known as Schertz Parkway). He appointed the Immaculate Conception Development Committee to raise funds for the development of a new church. On Christmas Day 1970, the Archdiocese established Immaculate Conception Parish, incorporating both churches. Soon after, the parish was renamed Good Shepherd Parish, with the church in Schertz being named Church of the Good Shepherd and the church in Marion retaining the name of Immaculate Conception.

Construction on the new church building began in Spring 1972 and was completed in October 1972. During that time, Masses in Schertz were held at the elementary school. Our pastor was Fr. Sean Moore. At the end of 1972, the Most Reverend Francis Furey, Archbishop of San Antonio, dedicated the new church, along with our newly named pastor, Father Emmet Carolan.

Over the next two decades, Fr. Carolan was succeeded by pastor Msgr. Robert Silverman (RIP) and his parochial vicar Msgr. Albert Maneth (RIP), then Fr. Michael O'Gorman, then Msgr. Roger Robbins.

In December 2001, construction of a larger church began on Live Oak Road in order to accomodate our ever-growing parish. In November 2002, the new church (with classroom annex) was completed, and the old church was sold to the City of Schertz. The old church building now houses the Schertz City Council Chambers.

On November 10, 2002, retired Bishop Bernard Popp officially dedicated the new church, along with Msgr. Robbins, who was later joined by Parochial Vicar Fr. Gregory Nevlud.

In June 2011, we welcomed Fr. Ed Pavlicek as our pastor, and he served our church community through June 2018. During that time, construction was completed on the Christy Administration & Pastoral Building.

Our current pastor, Fr. Octavio Muguerza, joined us as our new pastor and shepherd on July 2, 2018.
