Saturday, October 5, 2019 | 9:00 AM – 3:30 PM | St. John Bosco Catholic School
Join altar servers from across the Archdiocese for a formation day at St. John Bosco Catholic School to learn how to serve Mass in ways prescribed by the liturgical norms. Participants will attend Mass celebrated by Archbishop GustavoGarcía-Siller, MSpS, followed by segments of theory and hands-on workshop practice. After lunch, boys and girls will be divided and learn more about vocations to the priesthood and religious life. The Department of Pastoral Ministries of the Archdiocese of San Antonio is offering this Altar Server Formation Day at no cost to all parishes of the archdiocese.
Workshop Stations for Hands on Training
Station 1: Smells & Bells: Learn about the procession, the incense and the bells of the Mass.
Station 2: Know Your Altar: Learn about how to set the altar and vocabulary of the items involved.
Station 3: Missal Control: Learn how to handle the Roman Missal during Mass for special rituals.
Father Octavio is highly recommending that we participate in this workshop for several reasons:
1. An opportunity to worship together with Archbishop Gustavo
2. Grow in appreciation for the great privilege to serve at the altar
3. Bond with other altar servers of the parish
4. Experience the Catholic Church beyond the walls of the parish
New altar servers are welcome and will be duly trained. The frequency of service for each altar server will depend on how many commit to this beautiful ministry. As a general rule, no altar server should have to serve more often than twice a month and at least once a month.
Let us know by September 22, 2019 if your child is able to go so we can proceed with the registration. When we know how many are going we will let you know the logistics/specifics. We will carpool from the front parking lot of Good Shepherd Church so we also need parents to help with transportation and chaperoning.
